BAMBU

About Bambu

Bambu was established in 2003, and their goal has always been to reduce our use and reliance on plastic by providing people with beautiful, non-toxic products made from nature.

Both Jeff & Rachel, the founders of bambu, were born in Portland, Oregon – a place that prides itself on local, homegrown and eco-friendly values. When they were relocated to China for work, a place often criticised for its manufacturing processes, they took these values with them. They wanted to see if they could find a way of doing things differently – creating interest and excitement in sustainable materials, whilst adhering to ethical business practices.

Today bambu continue to focus on the same key values. They source materials locally, work with people who work with their hands, and produce safe and durable products that will last for years. The primary material they work with is bamboo – well known these days as an endlessly renewable resource that grows very fast without the need for pesticides or fertilisers – and they also work with other sustainable materials such as cork and organic cotton.

For bambu sustainability goes beyond the balance between what they take from the earth and what they return to it. It is central to how they conduct themselves as a business. They are committed to 3rd party certification and testing, promote fair labour practices and safe working conditions and ‘green’ their supply chain. The result – a number of accolades by leading associations and trade groups. They are a certified B Corp – a community of businesses that balance purpose and profit.

    Utensils

There is a bambu utensil for every job in the kitchen! Each one is made from a single piece of USDA certified organic bamboo - a material that is more durable than wood and is naturally stain-resistant and anti-microbial. Made without glues and lacquers and hand-finished with naturally food safe organic oil.

Only the popular bambu tongs are made in a different way with the two arms joined to a central piece of bamboo.

The bamboo used grows and is harvested from wild groves, not from farmed plantations. It is free from pesticides and fertilisers – which protects the farmers – and is certified USDA organic by IMO Switzerland.

  • Cutting Boards

    Cutting Boards

Bambu offers a range of cutting boards that will compliment any kitchen - from timeless, classic designs to shaped boards that work well as a serving platter.  Bamboo absorbs little moisture so resists swelling and warping, making it a superior, long-lasting material for everyday use. All of the boards are fully reversible – cut on one side, serve on the other.

Each board is made from strips of bamboo that are glued together. Bambu uses a water-based, food grade adhesive imported from Europe that contains no formaldehydes. They are finished with a natural, food safe oil which is made from certified organic ingredients.

    Care:
Bambu’s boards should be washed in warm soapy water, not in the dishwasher. Occasional application of a small amount of vegetable oil will keep the boards in good condition.

    Packaging:
Some of the boards come with a sticker, which is made from PT (Polyethylene Terephthalate) and can be recycled like a plastic bottle. Some come with an FSC card label tied on with waxed cotton. Check individual products for details.
