Their Ethics

Miracle plant bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, and is an endlessly renewable resource, growing new shoots from its root system after being harvested. It thrives naturally without using any pesticides or fertilizers, takes in greenhouse gasses and produces 35% more oxygen than the equivalent trees.

The founders of bambu come from Portland in Oregon, US - a place that prides itself on local, home grown, eco-friendly values. They relocated to China and took these values with them. Ten years later, their small production and development team continues to design modern products that they proudly share with the rest of the world.

They continually promote fair labour practices and safe working conditions, and 'green' their supply chain. These efforts have been recognised by leading associations and trade groups.

  • Utensils

Bambu makes a wide range of utensils and cooking tools, each of which is cut and hand-shaped from a single piece of bamboo.

The bamboo used grows as a wild crop near the workshops and it is harvested by local farmers. The sources of bamboo for the utensils are audited annually by IMO Switzerland and are certified as 100% organic.

Bambu believes products that come into contact with food should be free of chemicals and toxins. Each utensil is finished with an oil which is also made from certified organic ingredients.

All bambu utensils are dishwasher safe, however they recommend hand washing to extend the life of the products.

Some of the utensils come with header card packaging, some come without any packaging. Check individual products for details.

  • Cutting Boards

    Cutting Boards

Bambu cutting boards are at the core of the product range – unequalled on the market for their design and craftsmanship. A team of master craftsmen, wood turners and sanders produce the boards one at a time, using relatively simple tools.

The boards are still made by the same family-owned producer that bambu started working with over 10 years ago. This group is based in a community known for its fine woodworking skills and is located near to where the bamboo grows as a wild crop.

Each board is made from strips of bamboo which are glued together. Bambu uses a water-based, food grade adhesive imported from Europe that contains no formaldehydes. They are finished with a natural, food safe oil which is also made from certified organic ingredients.

All bambu’s boards should be washed in warm soapy water, not in the dishwasher. Occasional application of a small amount of vegetable oil or bambu goo will keep the boards in good condition. Bambu goo is a natural blend of beeswax, carnauba wax, soybean oil, coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Contains no petroleum distillates, silicone, or linseed oils.

  • Tabletop

Bambu produces a wide range of products for presenting and serving food elegantly.

Many of these products also double as functional pieces for the kitchen – for example bambu’s cutting boards also make great serving platters if you keep one side for cutting; one for serving. All of bambu’s serving products are made to the same high standards as their cutting boards.

As well as bamboo boards and trays Bambu also produce some unique cedar wood trays and coasters. Each one-of-a-kind tray is made from hand selected cedar wood planks reclaimed from 70 year old Chinese houses. The uniqueness of each board is derived from the colour, grain, lines and knots that are inherent in the wood.

  • Textiles

Bambu use a selection of original and eco-friendly textiles in their range.

Their hemp denim is a blend of hemp and certified organic cotton (60/40). It is durable, wonderfully soft and absorbent, and improves with wear.

Hemp has been cultivated for industrial purposes for over 12,000 years. It is a very robust plant and grows very quickly in diverse soil conditions. It can be ready for harvest in approximately 100 days, making it a sustainable super crop.

Bambu’s hemp is grown without herbicides or pesticides. Hemp naturally suppresses  the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. It is also mildew resistant and anti-microbial, making it an excellent fibre for use in the kitchen and on the table.

Bambu's newest material is an organic cotton with a smart stripe print which is also know as Hickory Cloth. This Organic Stripe is a strong fabric of twill construction made of certified organic cotton. From the 1920’s to the 1950’s it was chiefly used for the manufacturing of work clothes so has a long heritage.

As expected bambu use top-quality components in their textile products including YKK zippers.
